Forensic Care

Forensic care is mental health care provided in a criminal context, including addiction care and care for the intellectually disabled. It is provided to persons with a psychiatric disorder who have committed a criminal offence and who run a high risk of re-offending. In those cases, a judge can order an offender to undergo care. The measure aims to treat the patient, reduce recidivism and protect society. Forensic care can be a combination of security and treatment or nursing, such as treatment in a clinic or a penitentiary psychiatric centre.
